There was a time when I thought that death acceptance was the opposite of death denial. I also thought that there were two signs of death denial: fear of death and dying, and strong attachments to life and living. My thinking was that if I didn’t have fear and anxiety about death, and I could sever my strong attachments in life, I would live peacefully with the full acceptance of death.

Those of us called to pursue a life with intention must do so.
You are part of a fraction of people in our world called to the journey of self-reflection, personal discovery and making sense of life and death. You have both the opportunity and the possibility to be transformed by this journey.
As a person living a conscious life, you must discern how you can be well within yourself and how you can confront and contribute to redressing and reconciling the challenging and ugly realities of our times. Someday, you’ll have to let go of everything that you’ve gathered in your life—the people, the possessions, the knowledge, the successes and even the stories that haven’t served you. And what will you take from this life? If you had five minutes left to live, only love would be on your mind. So be in love now!
To live a conscious, intentional life, you’ve got to know who you are and what you stand for. Love is the starting point for clarifying who and what matter most. (See Love is the Answer: Part 1.)
- You’ve got to love yourself to accept who you are, what you’ve done and what you haven’t.
- You’ve got to love yourself to do the personal work of growth and transformation.
- You’ve got to love this planet and all its inhabitants and find your place in the messy, complicated, laborious path of making this world a better place.
