Mother’s Day Can Be Complicated
Oct 17, 2016Mother’s Day can be complicated. It all depends on where you’re at in your relationship with your mother, motherhood, and mothering.
In our work with people who see pragmatic end of life planning as an opportunity for personal growth and transformation, we help uncover who and what matters most. Mothering, more so than mothers, is a common theme.
This Mother’s Day, we invite you to consider that there are many people in your life who mother you, which may or may not include the woman who birthed or raised you. And, we think it’s safe to say that you probably mother people of all ages in your life.
We often don’t share what’s in our hearts, even with those we cherish; it can feel too scary or awkward to express the depths of our feelings, or we tell ourselves “they already know.”
Well life is unpredictable. You don’t know when you’re going to die or when things will change irrevocably – nobody does.
Reena’s mother died many years ago and there are still many things Reena wishes she could ask her and say to her. Michelle’s Mom lives with advanced dementia and no longer knows that Michelle is her daughter. The most painful part for Michelle is what she left unsaid.
The reality is that with all your relationships, you never know when it’s going to be too late to talk about how you feel. Share what’s in your heart now with the many people who mother you and those you mother. Don’t leave things unsaid. You may not get the chance if you wait.
In honour of mothering and the ever so many forms it takes, check out this inspiring 3-minute video about mothers and love.
