3 Questions to Get You Grounded in the New Year

making sense of life & death Jan 31, 2022

Welcome to the new year!

Just weeks ago, I never imagined that we would be starting 2022 with new health and safety concerns and more social restrictions. As the unpredictability of life has become the new normal, it’s more important than ever to align our hearts and actions with what we value most.

Even in the uncertainty, we all have values, principles, ethics, moral codes, standards and codes of behaviour. We have hopes and fears, and people, places, and things that matter most to us. As we venture into the new year, it is crucial to be aware of those parts of ourselves that ground us.

The most powerful way to live consciously and with purpose, is to keep in mind that your life is finite and precious. This way, you will shape your world, instead of the world shaping you.

How you use your time and energy and where you place your attention matters. It makes a difference in how you live your life and it can inspire you to get into action to be as prepared as possible for your inevitable death.

Consider these three questions:

  1. If you knew you had limited time to live, what would you want to do? How and with whom would you spend your time?
  2. If the people in your life were to remember 3 things about you, what would you want them to remember?
  3. When in your life have you felt most like yourself?

Sometimes just posing the questions helps me put things into perspective. Try reading them aloud and see what happens. But don’t stop there. Take out your journal, type the answers out on your device, or answer these out loud with a partner and see what shifts. Your answers could be very short bullet points, or long and juicy. It’s up to you.
